This 5-year collaboration with poet Deryn Rees-Jones culminated in an exhibition at the Victoria Gallery & Museum Liverpool in 2020. Centred on creative possibilities that exist in exploring the relationship between text and image the work included papercuts, animations, drawings and paintings with poems by Rees-Jones to explore the single female body and its relationship to, and movement through, space and time.
For the exhibition, Hodes and Rees-Jones cultivated an archive of association as they juxtaposed text and artefact from the Museum and University of Liverpool Special Collections. Taking on the idea of errancy, of women’s bodies transgressing spaces, wandering off the path, they offered the viewer a multitude of potential navigations through a new archival landscape. References include the writers; Virginia Woolf’s essay A Room of One’s Own 1929 for papercuts, Perpetual Night; Robert Hooke’s Micrographia 1667 for the papercuts, Ghost Orchard; Elizabeth Bishop’s poem, Questions of Travel 1965 and Helen Thomas’s As It Was, 1926 for the animations.
