Charlotte Hodes’ graphic work created since 2015 takes the form of woodcuts, printed during multiple residencies at Oficina Bartolomeu Dos Santos (OBS) Tavira, Portugal and published by Culford Press. Hodes often creates sequences of woodcuts that relate to her larger projects. This includes; In the Shadows 2015 [11 woodcuts]; Dressed Patterns 2016 [9 woodcuts] that drew upon landscape, text & decorative motifs sourced at the Spode Museum Trust archive of engravings; After the Taking of Tea 2018 [8 woodcuts]; En Plein Air [21 unique prints, woodcut, lino, collage] and Scenes in the Landscape 2022 [27 unique prints, woodcut, lino, watercolour, collage] for the project Conversations en Plein Air 2023. The imagery of women in the form of silhouettes occupy flat, patterned environments and landscapes save for shadows and negative forms which have as much presence as the silhouettes themselves.
